Chapter History

The 'Infamous' Alpha Lambda chapter of La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Inc. was established on Sunday April 28, 2002 by four men of profound vision who sought to affect a greater change on the campus of St. John's University that would in turn transcend into positive societal changes beyond the confines of the campus. Despite the abundance of fraternal organizations that existed at the time, none exuded the professionalism, prestige and sincerity necessary to serve as a catalyst for the unification of the vast Latino and minority community.

In the Spring of 2001, the arduous journey of (a) exceeding all the expansion prerequisites deemed by the National Council of LUL, (b) developing rapport with administration and receiving permission to solicit interested men with several limitations, and (c) establishing an interested group of gentlemen. Despite the overwhelming opposition encountered, the unwavering spirit of four men proved insurmountable as the Alpha Line (Los Existencialistas) of the Alpha Lambda colony was born on Thursday February 7, 2002.

Since our inception in 2002, the Alpha Lambda Chapter has incessantly remained on the vanguard of political and community empowerment by developing St. John’s students into influential leaders that strive to exert knowledge and power into its peers in order to attain mutual success. We commit ourselves to academic excellence, leadership development and cultural enlightenment, enhanced by a diverse cognizant membership. La Hermandad strives to preserve and promote an inclusive intellectual environment for its members, in addition to the general community. Despite our affiliation, the ultimate quest to improve humanity has never been through segregation and in that regard; La Unidad Latina has been critically acclaimed for its extrovert methodologies. In the execution of its conceived mission, La Unidad Latina will:

• Provide all students with the academic, cultural and social support necessary to excel in institutions of higher learning.
• Increase opportunities for minority children and adolescents to achieve in elementary and secondary schools.
• Develop leaders that shall provide, develop and implement the tools for community empowerment.
• Inspire and invoke ethnic pride and cultural awareness in the Latino community and beyond.
• Support the efforts to enhance the growth and prosperity of the Latino community.
• Collaborate with individuals, organizations and institutions that will join our efforts to improve the conditions of our beloved communities.

On March 27, 2006, the Alpha Lambda Chapter was officially recognized by St. John’s University as a fraternal organization within the ALFSA council. We are honored with this new opportunity and look forward to a prosperous future.
